10 (Real) Adult Books for the Young Adult Reader

kassidy porter

By Kassidy Porter

Cuddling up with a good book is one of my favorite “me-time” activities. As I started my twenties, I began to realize that the sixteen year olds in my Judy Blume books were becoming less and less relatable. I wasn’t quite ready to start reading my mom’s favorite romance novels, so I started my quest to find books that make the transitions from teen section to adult section a little easier.

1. Love Does by Bob Goff

Goff has lived an incredible life with many stories to share from it, which he does in this book. He inspires you with the lessons he teaches and will spark a desire to add some stories to your own life.

2. The Giver by Lois Lowry

You all probably had to read it in elementary school, but this is something for any age. I reread it over summer and it gave me a whole new appreciation of life.

3. The One and Only by Emily Giffin

This story shows that you can change your life at any point. The main character has known her whole life what her "plan" was until one day, everything changes.

4. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Once you start, you won't be able to put this thriller down! Be sure to check out the movie in theaters October third!

5. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

The story begins as a lieutenant of the Second World War is stranded in the ocean after his plane crashes. The rest is an unforgettable journey of a man that never gives up.

6. Same Kind of Different As Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore

This is one of my favorite books, and I continue to learn something new every time I read it. It is an incredible true story that reminds us that God can use any of us to change the world, even if we don't think we're ready.

7. The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin

Sometimes you need a reminder to smile at the beginning of your day. Rubin takes us through her journey of trying to find the joy in the little things, take her advice and I guarantee it will change your life.

8. Just Do Something by Kevin DeYoung

In a world where we are convinced we’re waiting to “hear God’s plan”, DeYoung teaches us that sometimes you just have to get up and do something. We know God is calling us to spread His Love and word so why aren’t we acting on it?

9. Kisses From Katie by Katie

Warning: this book will make you want to pack a suitcase and move to Africa as soon as possible. Katie tells her inspiring story of skipping college and moving to Uganda after feeling a call from God. She is now a mother to thirteen little girls whose pictures and stories will melt your heart.

10. Wife 22 by Melanie Gideon

A novel about a married woman who finds herself at a stopping point in life. It’s a story of losing herself and finding herself in ways she would have never imagined.
